Stipend Level Policy

On May 18, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor published its final rule under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which increases the salary threshold for exempting certain employees from FLSA overtime requirements. The current law entitles all workers in the United States to overtime pay, unless they are exempted because they are paid on fixed, preset salaries; are engaged in executive, administrative, or professional duties; and are paid at least $23,660 per year. Under the new rule, the salary threshold will be increased to $47,476 effective December 1, 2016.

To comply with the DOL ruling, on August 10, 2016, the NIH issued the Projected Stipend Levels for Postdoctoral Trainees and Fellows for FY 2017.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine will continue to have a minimum stipend level.  Effective December 1, 2016, the minimum stipend level for Research Fellows at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be the DOL base  minimum of $47,476.

No Research Fellow will be hired below the prevailing minimum stipend level.   Incumbent Research Fellows will be incremented to at least the prevailing minimum stipend level no later than December 1, 2016.   Mentors are encouraged to exceed this minimum stipend level commensurate with the training, expertise, and productivity of the individual. The projected NIH stipend schedule for NRSA fellows is a reasonable guide to postdoctoral starting stipends.
