Jacobi/Montefiore Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Overview

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship ACGME accredited in 2018 and sponsored by the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is primarily based at Jacobi Medical Center. Jacobi Medical Center, located in the Bronx, is an American College of Surgery verified Level I Trauma Center and part of New York City’s municipal hospital system, Health + Hospitals Corporation. With approximately 2000 trauma admissions (80% blunt, 20% penetrating) a year, Jacobi is one of the busiest of 16 trauma centers in New York City. Additionally, Jacobi is one of only three burn centers in the City.

Fellows will do at least nine months of critical care to be board eligible for Surgical Critical Care along with one month of critical care elective time and two months on the trauma service. The Fellow will receive experience in the critical care of blunt and penetrating trauma, traumatic brain injury, post-operative obstetrics/gynecologic, vascular, thoracic, general surgery and a pre-and post-operative cardiothoracic patients. Additionally, with two months rotation on the trauma service and trauma call throughout the year, the curriculum allows for ample opportunity for the Fellow to gain operative experience in trauma and acute care surgery. In addition to formal electives, the curriculum is designed to allow for the interested Fellow to gain exposure to endovascular/interventional radiology procedures and echocardiography training. The Fellow will take in-house call approximately once a week (with one “golden” weekend per month). The Fellow will have 4 weeks vacation to take when they want.

The Fellow will work with and is expected to help teach residents from the Montefiore General Surgery Program. Six core faculty members are dedicated to providing a rigorous and dynamic year of education in primarily trauma- and acute care surgery-based critical care medicine to the Fellow. Our vision/goal is to prepare a board eligible/certified surgeon who has successfully completed an ACGME (or equivalent) general surgery residency program for a career in the areas trauma and critical care medicine.
