Global Health Program

"After my three years here I intend to work in the developing world. I don’t think I could have asked for better preparation than the kind of education that I have received here!""

Michael Reid, Program Graduate
Lead Physician, Global Health Programs, University of Pennsylvania

The Global Health Program within the Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Residency offers trainees diverse exposure to this exciting field.

A formal curriculum in Global Health is available for both categorical and PC/SIM PGY-2 residents and is designed as an intense immersion into the clinical, social, economic and political aspects of health in the developing world. The program features 60 hours of seminars led by faculty from Montefiore and Einstein, with invited speakers from other academic institutions, and various non-governmental organizations such as Doctors for Global Health and Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

In the PGY-3 year, residents will apply what they have learned in the classroom by participating in a month-long rotation at a rural hospital in Kisoro, Uganda. This program exists in collaboration with Doctors for Global Health and gives our residents hands-on experience practicing clinical medicine in the developing world under the supervision of dedicated global health faculty. Residents reinforce their knowledge while in the US through ongoing global health journal clubs and case reviews orchestrated by global health faculty.

In addition, a Global Health Fellowship was established in order to train faculty in the arena of international health, which runs hand-in-hand with the resident training experience. Fellows are also trained in medical education and conduct research projects while in Uganda.
