Southern Appointed Chief of Section of Hospital Medicine
Dr. William (Will) Southern has been appointed Chief of a new Section of Hospital Medicine within the Division of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Southern first came to Montefiore as a teaching-hospitalist in 2002, and quickly distinguished himself as a superb clinician-educator. After three years (2002-2005) as a full-time clinician, during which time he directed the Weiler Division's hospitalist program, he embarked on a clinical research fellowship, funded by Einstein’s Institute for Medical Effectiveness Research. This 2-year faculty development fellowship (2005-2007) included training in the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP). In 2008, Dr. Southern received a career development award by the Einstein/Montefiore Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to further pursue health services research.
At the core of this newly formed Section of Hospital Medicine are more than 30 hospitalist faculty members on both the east and west campuses. The missions of the Section of Hospital Medicine are:
- to provide high-quality inpatient care and medical education to residents and students
- to participate in continuous quality improvement
- to maintain patient safety on the inpatient medical services; and to generate new knowledge through clinical and health services research
