Inside Einstein July 2011

Student Spotlight

Marking a Milestone On Tuesday, June 28, 2011, Einstein instituted a Declaration Celebration  a new tradition to be held annually, to officially welcome first-year Ph.D. students into their labs and mark the start of their thesis work.

Donuts for Water — Tisha Todorova recently teamed with several student groups, turning National Donut Day into "Donut for Water Day," a charitable event aimed at helping fund construction of a well for a developing nation. The event raised $550 toward the groups’ $5,000 goal. The collaborators also plan to offer other events, including a charity bike ride in late July and a dance workshop with the Ballroom Dance Club on August 1, 2011, to raise money for the project. To make a donation to the Einstein Water Well Project, visit my charity: water. Ms. Todorova is a research technician. The student groups co-sponsoring the events include SNMA/LMSA, Festivus and the Einstein Bike Club.

Breaking Records — During the summer of 2011, 142 Einstein medical students not currently in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) are participating in fellowship-supported research projects. The number is a significant increase from the 105 to 112 non-MSTP students who have participated in summer projects over the past seven years.

Inspiring Youth Bronx Science and Health Opportunities Program (BxSHOP) continued its efforts to promote the advancement of underserved and economically disadvantaged students interested in health careers by hosting its second annual youth conference, "Pathway to Health and Medical Careers." Held at Einstein and at Fordham University from June 29 through July 1, 2011, and on July 5, 2011, the conference was made possible by the Bronx-Westchester Area Health Education Center, the Einstein Enrichment Program, Fordham's STEP program and Einstein's Hispanic Center of Excellence. Each day of the conference centered on a theme — focus, explore, reflect and cultural competency — concerning which participants took part in didactic sessions and hands-on workshops.
