BBC features research by Yousin Suh, Ph.D., on the link between the genes that influence the length of telomeres, the protective ends of chromosomes, and longevity. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that participants who lived to a very old age were better able to maintain the length of their telomeres and had advantageous variants of genes involved in telomere maintenance. Dr. Suh is associate professor of medicine and of genetics.
