Application Procedure
This program consists of three calendar years of instruction apportioned as follows:
Plan A: For those who enter the training program after a minimum of two years of pediatric training the schedule is:
First Year: The same schedule as for the first year in adult neurology until May, when the residents assume the role of a second year resident as described below. One month's vacation is included.
Second Year: This year is divided into two, six-month rotations. One is at the East campus, covering the JMC and the Einstein inpatient service. The other is at the West campus. The residents cover the inpatient and outpatient services at our affiliated hospitals. The trainee serves as a senior neurology resident on the child neurology service at either institution. He or she is responsible for primary inpatient care, supervision of adult neurology and pediatric neurology rotators, and for the consultation service in pediatrics, the newborn nursery, pediatric emergency service in pediatrics, and child psychiatry.
The resident is on second call on 24-hour long range beeper throughout the year, and is responsible for organizing weekly clinical conferences and attending pediatric neurology clinic. He or she is supervised by one of the pediatric neurology attendings, assigned monthly or at six week intervals, who makes daily rounds. Pediatric Neurology duties do not occupy more than 8 months of a 12 month period. The remainder of the year is spent on electives or previously arranged research as outlined in the adult program. One month of vacation is allotted.
Third Year: Trainees usually spend one to two months as consultants on the adult neurology service. If electives have been taken in the first year, an equivalent time period must be spent on the adult neurology service as a senior resident. Four months are allotted to responsibilities in Child Neurology as described in the second year. The rest of the year can be spent on electives outlined in the adult training program. Time in basic neurological research can be arranged. A vacation of one month is allowed.
Plan B: Residents with previous training in adult neurology spend this first year in a pediatric residency program, with the second year spent as outlined in Plan A. Residents can elect to take the third year in the program, though this decision will be determined by their previous adult neurology training.
Outpatient Services: During the first year, each trainee attends an assigned adult
neurology clinic at either JMC or or the Moses division of MMC. In the second
and third year, the trainee attends a pediatric neurology clinic for one session
per week. He or she can elect to attend clinics for private ambulatory patients,
and also may attend the Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center in the
Kennedy Center.
