EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Albert Einstein College of Medicine ADULT NEUROLOGY TRAINING PROGRAM

Evaluation of Competencies
Application Procedure

The training program consists of three calendar years of instruction in clinical neurology, with substantial amounts of elective time. In addition, many neurology residents take a specialized fellowship. There is a full schedule of specialty rounds (neuromuscular, epilepsy, ophthalmology) held weekly at both major campuses. Grand Rounds are held weekly at the Montefiore campus. A list of invited Grand Rounds speakers and topics for the eighteen months is appended at the back of the brochure. Additional Grand Rounds speakers were chosen from the AECOM faculty.

First Year (Junior Resident): The resident spends six months as a junior-admitting resident in clinical neurology on the Moses Ward. The remaining months are spent on the consultation service, electives, neuroradiology and vacation (one month).

Second Year (Senior Resident): This 12 month period is spent in consultation and electives at the Montefiore, Einstein/Weiler and JMC sites(5-6 months), Pediatric Neurology (1-2 months), Elective (3-4 months) and Vacation (1 month). The senior resident obtains emergency room experience while on the consultation service and during night call.

Third-Year (Chief Year): During this year, most residents have 4.5 months of patient care responsibility as a inpatient and outpatient chief resident and on Pediatric Neurology. The remaining time is spent in electives described below ("Elective and Subspecialty Training"). Residents may spend part of the third year in research with faculty members in Neurology or one of the basic science departments.

Outpatient Services: For all three years, each resident attends the same neurology outpatient clinic at either JMC or the Moses Division of Montefiore one afternoon each week.

This continuity clinic provides residents with an opportunity to follow patients over a number of years. All clinics are supervised by full-time staff attendings and a chief resident.

Elective and Subspecialty Training: Subspecialty training in child neurology is offered in block rotations. Most residents take electives in neuroradiology, EEG and evoked potentials as well as EMG/neuromuscular disease. In addition, clinical electives are also available is neuro-ophthalmology, headache, pain, neuropsychology, sleep-medicine, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, stroke, neurorehabilitation, neurogeriatrics, movement disorders,neuro-oncology, pain medicine, neurogenetics, behavioral neurology and medical informatics.
