Zippety Do Dah: Zipcars at Einstein

The Einstein campus is now a parking site for Zipcars.

Zipcar is a new service that rents cars to members at low hourly and daily rates. As part of a special promotion, Zipcar is offering annual membership to Einstein students, faculty and staff at a discounted annual rate of just $25 per year. The hourly rate includes gas, insurance and 180 miles per day.

Einstein is seeking to offer members of its community alternatives to having one's own car on campus. The cars are available to run errands, plan a day trip or weekend adventure, or for those who may need a car at a moment's notice for just about anything. Reservations can be made online or on a mobile device, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Zipcar's business model is becoming extremely popular in urban areas where parking is scarce and the cost of car ownership is high," said Richard Zaiff, administrator of business affairs at Einstein.

He added, "According to Zipcar, one of their cars can replace as many as fifteen privately owned vehicles, leading to less traffic and therefore less air pollution in our community. It's a way for us to be green, while helping to address the high cost of gas, as well as the scarcity of parking on campus and in the area. We hope occasional drivers will see this as a viable alternative to parking a car full time on campus. "
