On Wednesday, June 25, the inner courtyard of the Jack and Pearl Resnick campus was transformed by festive decor for the inaugural Staff Appreciation Picnic. Tables filled the yard, decorated with blue and white tablecloths and festooned with blue and white balloons. Lively music pumped good vibrations at the hands of DJ John Schmidt, who was taking a break from his mailroom duties.
The aroma of a barbeque drew more than 1,000 members of the Einstein community, who found themselves being served lunch by Einstein Dean Allen M. Spiegel, M.D. as well as members of the Deans office and the College of Medicines administration.
Staff from Human Resources handed out free water bottles and raffle tickets for chances to win 32 donated prizes, while members of the Environmental Health & Safety Department offered safety information and raffle tickets of their own. Anchoring the festivities was Assistant Dean Stephen Lazar, who offered additional prize-winning opportunities to individuals who could answer trivia questions about Einsteins history.
"We're looking at how we can engage our employees more and let them know 'you're important to what we do'," said Yvonne Ramirez, Chief Human Resources Officer. "This is one example of what we hope to accomplish as part of a larger program."
Ms. Ramirez added that she and her staff hope to work with the medical school's Volunteer Committee which helped shape the day's event to stage other activities, such as a Volunteer Day and an Annual Holiday Party, to further engage members of the Einstein family.
"The important thing is that we do what our employees think is important. We'll ask people for their input as we make future plans."
Amid comments ranging from "This is wonderful" to "The Dean served me my burger," Lorene Tapellini, a designer in the Graphic Arts Department summed up the good feelings of the day, noting, "Its a very nice event. I felt appreciated and thankful to Human Resources and the administration for doing this. I also won a prize, and that was neat."
