For most people, finding a job is often aided by personal connections. Networking is a key component of expanding those connections and increasing one's access to opportunities. In the 21st century, that means establishing and maintaining an online presence.
In an effort to help members of the Einstein community optimize their professional online presence, Einstein's Entrepreneurship and Biotechnology Club (EBC) recently teamed with Einstein's Women's Networking Group and the career and professional development office to host a special event, "Elevate your LinkedIn Workshop and Headshots Picture Day".
"While having a LinkedIn profile is second nature to those in business and other professional sectors, people in academia are accustomed to more formal networking and developing lengthy curriculum vitae to bolster their connections," explained Arthee Jahangir, co-founder of the EBC. "With the shift in the importance of having a professional online identity and cultivating relationships, we wanted to show scientists how having a well-structured LinkedIn profile also can benefit them, especially since LinkedIn is the most popular professional social networking service online."
During the event, Dr. Alberto Moldon, an Einstein post-doc alumnus who is now a senior analyst at Prescient Life Sciences, presented a workshop on how to curate an effective LinkedIn profile. "LinkedIn is more than just a profile: it's a place for collaboration, for gathering news relevant to your interests and career searches," he said. "What you show in your profile will tell who you are. It's your own online branding."
Dr. Moldon also highlighted tips and tricks for using LinkedIn most effectively, showing examples of its search capabilities and how to use its various data tools for seeking potential networking contacts.
The event concluded with a networking session that coincided with a photo shoot. Each of the event's 80 attendees had headshots taken by a professional photographer.
"We encouraged everyone to dress in business attire because we wanted to offer them the opportunity to get a professional headshot," said Ms. Jahangir. "Professional shots are typically expensive, so most people rely on personal photos instead."
The event also served to launch Einstein's official LinkedIn groups for researchers and Ph.D. alumni. Anyone interested in learning about upcoming events hosted by the EBC can join their group on LinkedIn as well.
"Within these groups, we can cultivate a lasting Einstein community, now and in the future," said Ms. Jahangir. "A simple ‘connect' can lead to a multitude of opportunities."
