For the second year, the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care (MECCC) has won the Livestrong Foundation's Community Impact Project contest. Montefiore received a total of 4,130 online votes, the highest amount received by participating hospitals in all regions.
As a winner of the contest, the cancer center will receive a grant to provide adult and pediatric oncology patients with music therapy for an entire year. Music therapy is used to promote relaxation, to assist with pain management and to diminish stress caused by both illness and hospitalization.
Using the funds, the MECCC will introduce a music therapy program based on the Jeffrey Frank Wacks Music Therapy Program employed at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, in Morristown, New Jersey. In addition to receiving financial support for this program, the MECCC will receive materials to aid facilitators and participants, along with training from the model program's staff.
"We want to thank the members of the Einstein and Montefiore communities whose votes helped us win this grant," said Dr. Steven Libutti, director of the MECCC, as well as professor of surgery and of genetics at Einstein, and associate director for clinical services of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center. "Last year, your support helped us win funds for a creative arts program, which we've since implemented into the services we offer our Center's patients."
