More than 100 members of the Einstein community recently gathered in the main hallway of the Leo Forchheimer Medical Science Building known as Einstein's "Main Street" for the annual Medical Student Research Poster Exhibition. Established in 1998, the event allows medical students across all four class years to display and discuss their research and related projects.
"The research on exhibit reflects the commitment of our medical students, while showcasing their excellence and the tremendous diversity of their interests," noted Dr. Ellie Schoenbaum, director of medical student research at Einstein and professor of epidemiology & population health, of medicine and of obstetrics & gynecology and women's health. "Many have been working on their projects since their first summer, and others took a year off between their third and fourth years to immerse themselves in research."
This year's exhibition featured 47 posters highlighting the research of more than 65 medical students, as many projects had multiple contributors. These included research by six students representing the Student Opportunities for Academic Research program, or SOAR—a structured experience of mentor—guided creative discovery that begins during a student's first year, which is aimed at developing students' analytic, critical thinking, and leadership skills, and leads to a research paper or other type of capstone project.
"We have twice the number of posters as last year," Dr. Schoenbaum observed. The posters detailed research in basic and translational science, and highlighted clinical research, educational interventions, community projects, as well as national and global health initiatives. Students offered succinct, informative descriptions of their research and discussed their work with faculty and staff in attendance.
The exhibition was sponsored by the office of medical education.
