By the year 2030, the Administration on Aging estimates that Americans age 65 or older will number 72.1 million — twice the number for the year 2000. And with aging, there are health challenges that can affect both elderly individuals and those who care for them.
Einstein's Jack and Pearl Resnick Gerontology Center, directed by Dr. Joe Verghese, seeks to address the health issues that affect aging Americans through advances in aging research, and by providing education and training that improves care of older adults.
The center recently instituted the Resnick Center Medical Student Research Award in Aging to recognize noteworthy research conducted by Einstein medical and M.D.-Ph.D. students involved in studies of aging. The award also honors the leadership and contributions of the Resnick family.
"We're all getting older, so it's critical that we conduct gerontology research," noted Dr. Verghese, the Murray D. Gross Memorial Faculty Scholar in Gerontology at Einstein, who also is chief of geriatrics and director of the division of cognitive & motor aging at Einstein's University Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center. "Our new award acknowledges that it's important for us to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of those doing research as well as the generosity and vision of those who support our efforts."
The inaugural presentation of the award took place during the Resnick Winter Research Symposium, held in the Price Center/Block Research Pavilion. Dr. Ellie Schoenbaum, director of medical student research at Einstein, presented the awards to second-year medical student Orli Haken and seventh-year M.D.-Ph.D. student Robert Tamayev in recognition of their respective studies related to the field of aging. Ms. Haken's mentor is Dr. Helena Blumen, assistant professor of medicine, and Mr. Tamayev's mentor is Dr. Luciano D'Adamio, professor of microbiology & immunology.
The event also featured a keynote lecture presented by Dr. Harry Shamoon, associate dean for clinical and translational research and director of the Harold and Muriel Block Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
