Upon entering the Harold and Muriel Block building on Thursday, February 27, 2014, employees from Einstein and its University Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, were encouraged to register for a series of health screenings that could help them determine potential health risks. Stations for testing blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, height/weight ratio with regard to body mass index, and vision offered insights on where one might need to take steps to improve health practices or whether to consider a visit to their doctor.
Measurements were noted on a special "health passport," and the screenings were concluded by a brief discussion with a health professional who explained what the numbers meant. Attendees could then wander among a multitude of tables offering information on addressing a range of health issues and preventative measures, including dental hygiene, exercise, smoking cessation, safe lifting of heavy objects, and helpful diets for improving intake of salt, fat and sugar—factors that contribute to hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, respectively.
The health fair was the third annual event hosted jointly by Einstein's HealthYU initiative, Montefiore's "To Your Health" and the 1199 SEIU. "Good health is so important, and as entities for which healthcare is a primary objective, we want to provide employees with information that can help them achieve their health goals and live a healthier lifestyle," said Michael Bloom, director of benefits, who spearheaded organization of the fair.
While gathering information and fun giveaways and raffle items, individuals also could learn about clinical trials taking place at Einstein and Montefiore for which they can volunteer. And they could get information on employee assistance programs and other benefits offered to employees at Einstein and at Montefiore. They also enjoyed a cooking demonstration by chefs from Montefiore's kitchen, who prepared garlic chicken in garlic and parsley sauce.
