Each year, members of the Einstein community gather in Robbins Auditorium for the annual Dennis Shields Awards for Outstanding Postdoctoral Research ceremony, which recognizes exemplary research contributions made by postdoctoral fellows at the College of Medicine.
This year's award recipients were Drs. Alma Rodenas-Ruano from the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience, in the laboratories of Drs. R. Suzanne Zukin and Pablo Castillo; Yehuda Salzberg, from the department of genetics, in the laboratory of Dr. Hannes Buelow; and Britta Will, from the department of cell biology, in the laboratory of Dr. Ulrich Steidl. Each had the opportunity to present their respective research, which had appeared in major research journals. They also received a $5,000 prize, presented by Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein, Dr. Jonathan Backer, director of Einstein's Belfer Institute for Advanced Biomedical Sciences, and Mrs. Toni Shields, the widow of Dr. Shields.
The award's namesake, who passed away in 2008, was a much-beloved member of the Einstein faculty for 30 years, and a cell biologist of international renown. In addition to serving as professor of developmental and molecular biology, and of anatomy and structural biology, Dr. Shields was the first director of the Belfer Institute, which oversees postdoctoral life at Einstein.
The awards ceremony was preceded by a luncheon, which featured a poster session highlighting research by the awardees and their fellow postdocs. Five promising researchers were selected by the Belfer Institute Advisory Committee to receive travel awards of $500, to support their attendance at future scientific meetings. These travel award recipients were Drs. Fernando Bruno, Chelsea Catsburg, Rohit Jangra, Daria Shcherbakova and Katie Stiles.
