During his 'State of the State' Address on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, Governor Andrew Cuomo committed to bringing Metro North commuter service to the East Bronx. His announcement offers validation to the members of the Bronx community who wish to have greater accessibility to Manhattan as well as locations up and down the eastern seaboard. The measure still needs approval by the state legislature.
Last May, members of Einstein's leadership joined with State Senator Jeff Klein and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., along with other Bronx business owners, employers, union leaders, homeowners and commuters on Bassett Avenue — near the railroad tracks — where the anticipated economic impact of MTA Metro North's expansion into the East Bronx was discussed. At that time, Senator Klein noted findings from a study that he and Borough President Diaz had commissioned, stating: "Conclusions from the study indicate that service expansion will have a profound economic benefit to the Bronx, including the creation of new jobs, reduced commute time and expected rise in home values."
If approved, the project — which is slated to begin in 2019 — will include a Morris Park station, in the vicinity of Morris Park Avenue and Bassett Avenue, along with stations in Co-op City, Hunts Point and Parkchester.
"The expansion represents a major breakthrough in achieving fast access to Penn Station and to Connecticut, along with easy transfers to Amtrak services," noted Gordon Earle, associate dean of public affairs and communications. "It will provide major benefits for our faculty, researchers, students and the entire East Bronx medical community, offering easy access to and from Manhattan, as well as to Washington, DC and to Connecticut and Boston."
