This year, for the first time, Einstein students formed a team to take part in the Bronx 10-Mile Run, part of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Five-Borough Series. They also used the race to provide information on preventive medicine and healthy living to Bronx residents who came out to cheer on runners.
The team departed campus before dawn to make the race's early-morning start. Adorned in Einstein t-shirts provided by the office of student activities, nearly 20 Einstein students from both the M.D. and Ph.D. programs turned out for the event, representing all running levels from first-timers and recreational runners to marathoners and ultra-marathoners. Its members also included non-runners, who distributed literature on such topics as healthy eating and smoking cessation, and items such as mini-first aid kits supplied by the family and social medicine department, from an Einstein booth near the starting/finish line.
The student team was in good company, as an unrelated group of Einstein/Montefiore faculty members participated in the race as well, along with more than 6,500 other runners. "We hope to coordinate with faculty next year, to run as one Einstein team and to make competing in the Bronx 10-Mile an annual Einstein tradition," said third-year medical student John Patrick Janowski, who organized the student participation.
The course for this Bronx leg of the NYRR series started near Yankee Stadium continuing along the Grand Concourse until it looped around Lehman College and Mosholu Parkway to retrace its path back along the Grand Concourse.
"We had a great time representing Einstein," said Mr. Janowski. "We bonded as classmates, while getting a unique tour of our home borough and experiencing the thrill of finishing a 10-mile race with thousands of other runners. And, we had the pleasure of meeting other members of the Bronx community while providing them with information on how to stay healthy."
