For the fifth consecutive year, members of the Einstein community gathered to participate in Einstein's annual World Cup soccer tournament. The competition, which also serves as a special community fundraiser, was introduced in 2009 by Dr. Laura Norwood Toro and Dr. Joerg Schlatterer, inspired by Einstein's extensive international community and by the World Cup played in South Africa that year.
This year's celebration of the world's most popular sport featured 11 teams competing for bragging rights on behalf of nations and cultures from around the globe, including Madagascar, Latin America, Brazil, China, Guatemala, Atlantis, Germany, Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy and Colombia. In the end, Latin America and Germany faced off in the final match, with Latin America winning the championship by a score of 6 to 1.
As in past years, in addition to promoting sportsmanship and camaraderie, the tournament participants raised a total of $1,100 for the Teak Fellowship, a charity designed to help talented New York City students from low-income families gain admission to and succeed at top high schools and colleges. In the five years since Einstein began holding its World Cup, the competitors have teamed to raise more than $5,100 to support this worthy cause.
Local sponsors, Good to Go and M&R Deli, provided food and refreshments served at the tournament.
