In 2008, the College of Medicine instituted its Faculty Mentoring Awards, given to senior faculty who have merited distinction in mentoring Einstein faculty in their career development. Typically, two awards are given—one to a faculty member whose primary research focus or appointment is in the basic sciences and one to a faculty member whose primary research focus is clinically based or in medical education.
On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at 4:30 p.m., the sixth annual presentation of the awards was held in the Block Building’s Lubin Dining Hall. This year, three faculty members were recognized for their mentoring contributions: Dr. Joan Berman, professor of pathology and of microbiology & immunology, as well as senior academic advisor to the graduate division, received the award for basic science mentor; and Drs. Laurie Bauman, professor of pediatrics and director of the Preventive Intervention Research Center, and Liise-anne Pirofski, professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology, and chief of the division of infectious diseases, each received an award for clinical science mentor. Dr. Pirofski also holds the Selma and Dr. Jacques Mitrani Chair in Biomedical Research.
The event began with the presentation of awards by Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean, and Dr. Genevieve S. Neal-Perry, associate dean for diversity mentoring. Then, Dr. James Gavin III gave a keynote talk on “Mentoring Faculty from Diverse Backgrounds for Scientific Excellence.” Dr. Gavin is clinical professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, chief executive officer and chief medical officer of Healing Our Village, and trustee emeritus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The award ceremony and keynote presentation were followed by a reception.
