At the start of the school year, students, faculty and staff at Einstein were greeted with a new, eye-pleasing look in the Forchheimer Medical Science Building’s main hallway, thanks to two months of masterful renovations completed by the College of Medicine’s engineering and facilities staff.
Where once walls hid view of a coffee shop, a student lounge, a maternal feeding room and the Board of Overseers’ conference room, open space now prevails. With the removal of those walls, floor-to-ceiling windows that have always graced the length of the building’s exterior now shed welcoming light over an inviting and appealing Einstein Café, featuring food, beverages and snacks amid a complement of tables and comfortable seating.
"The location is really central to everything," said one student, "and having coffee close to the library is really helpful. We spend a lot of time there."
In addition to coffee, the café offers many of the same food items previously available, along with some new additions, such as chicken wings and roasted vegetables. In addition, the vending machines, accessible in a small room adjacent to the café, have a broader variety of offerings.
Throughout the day, the space buzzes with activity. Student study groups make use of the seating area, capitalizing on the comfortable accommodations and access to WiFi that support collaborative interactions. Faculty and staff also can be found engrossed in work-related conversations over coffee or enjoying a food break.
"The café provides a less restrictive environment for us to work besides the library," noted another student. "We can talk about our courses or study quietly."
"It's nice to have the added option," agreed a classmate. "And these chairs are comfortable!"
While Einstein Café hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Fridays, coffee, soft drinks and snack items can be found around the clock in the vending machines.
