On Tuesday, August 20, 2013, Dr. Michael Baganizi, superintendent of Kisoro District Hospital and on-site program director for the Einstein-Doctors for Global Health Program, made his first visit to New York – which included a stop at the College of Medicine. Dr. Baganizi talked about the special program established in 2006, among his institution and Einstein, and its University Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center.
Three dozen Einstein medical students filled a conference room to overflowing as they listened to Dr. Baganizi describe the experiences available for first-year students in the summer before second year, and for fourth-year students during their elective time.
Each year, through global health fellowships, several Einstein medical students, and residents from Montefiore, travel to Uganda to take part in the program. The residents round on the wards and assist with care at the hospital with Dr. Jerry Paccione, professor of clinical medicine at Einstein and director of the global health medicine residency program at Montefiore; medical students assist with special projects identified by community members, Dr. Baganizi and his team of community workers.
Through the years, more than a dozen such projects have been undertaken; they have included establishing a nutrition education program, providing training for community health workers, and educating women about and providing screenings for cervical cancer.
"The students work on helping to address health needs that we feel can be fulfilled," noted Dr. Baganizi. "We want to be sure that we provide helpful information and resources without setting up unrealistic expectations. The students’ contributions have been instrumental to their success."
"The projects truly make an impact," agreed Dr. Paccione. "In 2010, two former Einstein students – Eleanor Chung and Chava Kahn – received Lancet’s most prestigious global award in community health for their efforts in establishing the first Women’s Clinic and Cervical Cancer Screening Program in rural Uganda, work they performed as Einstein global health fellows."
