Dr. Kartik Chandran, associate professor of microbiology & immunology, has been named a Harold and Muriel Block Faculty Scholar in Virology. The honor recognizes his groundbreaking research on Ebola and related viruses. He joins other notable members of the Einstein faculty, working in a variety of disciplines, who recently were recognized as Harold and Muriel Block Scholars.
Dr. Chandran's research focuses on Ebola virus, which is one of the world's deadliest viruses, with a mortality rate of up to 90 percent among those infected and no known cure. Dr. Chandran's laboratory helped identify the role of the protein NPC1 as an essential receptor for allowing Ebola virus to enter cells. Their finding suggests a possible strategy for blocking infection due to Ebola.
Last year, Dr. Chandran's work earned him a five-year, $4.8 million grant from the NIH to study the molecular mechanism that allows Ebola virus to cause infection and spread in animals. His research team is investigating this along with how the virus may be harbored in nature.
The late Muriel Block was a passionate supporter of medical research. Her bequest of more than $150 million is the largest gift in the College of Medicine's nearly 60-year history.
