A group of Einstein students recently got some real-world clinical experience by practicing on some unusual "patients": pigs.
About 60 students turned out for the annual suturing workshop hosted by Einstein's Emergency Medicine Society (EMS) on Thursday, January 31. Guided by a half-dozen emergency medicine physicians from Montefiore and Jacobi medical centers, the students learned how to perform interrupted suturing on pig feet.
"I think our members really benefit from having exposure to emergency room [ER] residents and attendings, sharing an experience that is part of everyday work in the ER," said Samim Atmar, a second-year student who helped coordinate the event.
The society is one of more than a dozen student-run interest groups devoted to individual medical specialties. The EMS hosts similar annual workshops on phlebotomy and intubation, as well as an annual discussion panel with emergency physicians. The intubation workshop will be held in the next couple months, according to Mr. Atmar.
"Drawing blood, suturing, and intubating aren't exclusive to emergency medicine per se," he added. "But by working with physicians in this way, we get an idea of the demands of this fast-paced specialty.
"What's more, our ER panel is a great way for students to get a grasp of the daily life of ER physicians, including the work hours, social life, residency years and other aspects."
The hands-on experience should help students like Mr. Atmar in their future training and professional work. A refugee from Afghanistan who came to the United States a decade ago, Mr. Atmar hopes to use his medical training to help refugee communities worldwide.
"Having lived as a refugee, I can relate to these populations, and want to do what I can to serve them. Einstein is providing real-world experiences to prepare me for that mission."
