On Monday, December 17, the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences hosted one of several recent LASIK Lunch Seminars, designed to offer members of the Einstein community an opportunity to learn about the very popular procedure and to have their questions answered. Dr. Roy Chuck, professor and chair of the department, as well as one of our nation's most prominent LASIK surgeons, led the information session, assisted by colleague David Medranda.
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, in which a laser is used to make an incision to peel back a layer of the cornea so that adjustments to the lens of the eye can be made. With vision correction often completed in a matter of seconds, freeing individuals from the burdens associated with wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, LASIK surgery has become extremely common. Approximately a half-million Americans undergo the procedure every year.
"But it's not for everyone," noted Dr. Chuck. "We want to provide people with knowledge that will help them make an informed decision, because, it's important for those considering surgery to fully understand the costs and benefits before making their decision."
He continued, "Although LASIK surgery is now a routine procedure, it still holds risks like any surgery does and each individual case must be thoroughly assessed and personalized accordingly."
Future information sessions on LASIK surgery and other vision-related issues are planned. "We'll be working with human resources, which has introduced a health initiative at Einstein," said Dr. Chuck, adding, "LASIK surgery discounts are available to all Einstein, Yeshiva and Montefiore employees."
