Each year, the Transition Ceremony officially marks the metamorphosis from the first two years of pre-clerkship courses for Einstein medical students to the next two years of intensive clinical training. Held this year on Sunday evening, June 10, 2012, the ceremony represents a changeover from a period in the students’ lives wherein their only concern has been how well they do as an individual, to the beginning of daily training and working as a team member.
"Up to this point, the student and his or her needs have always come first, and now the seeds of 'the patient’s needs come first’ are planted," noted Dr. Stephen G. Baum, senior associate dean for student affairs. "While considerations of professionalism, ethics, and being able to communicate with others have been mentioned all along, these now become the essentials of succeeding in the clinical arena."
This year’s keynote speaker featured Dr. Sharon Silbiger, a nephrologist who is professor of clinical medicine and long-time clerkship and residency director in the department of medicine. With help from the department of communications and public affairs, she prepared a video on these professional skills as defined by patients, students and residents in their later years of training.
"The video was truly inspirational, providing a moving and wonderful experience for all," said Dr. Nadine T. Katz, senior associate dean for student academic affairs. "It also was a real credit to one of our most respected colleagues and to the trainees she has helped to mold over the years."
Other memorable moments from the event included a special rap written and performed by faculty member Dr. Steve Sparr, on how to prepare for clerkships; tips on how to succeed in clerkships offered by senior medical student Ashley Beecy; the recitation of the Prayer of Maimonides by the Class of 2014, along with an oath of their own creation, led by Dr. Elizabeth Kitsis, and viewing of a student-created video shown during the reception.
