Every spring, the Forchheimer lobby is host to the annual Medical Students Poster Weeks, where current Einstein medical students display the research they have conducted throughout their time in the program. The kickoff reception was held on March 20, 2012, and the posters will be on display through early May.
Research can be invaluable to the medical student experience, whether it is laboratory-based to provide better understanding of the science that informs clinical practice or community-focused to offer further insight into the patients and communities they will one day be serving. Many Einstein's medical students elect to conduct research in a diverse range of areas that include basic science research, clinical investigations, and community-oriented public health projects, which are detailed in the posters currently hanging in the Forchheimer lobby.
One such research poster, "Partnering for Health Promotion of LGBT Youth of Color at an Urban Community Center," is presented by medical students Chelsea McGuire, Mariya Masyukova, Sanchit Gupta, Anthony Bowen, Christopher Lin-Brande, Desmond Sutton, Sarah Milburn, and Caitlin Schrepel. The poster details the continuing efforts of educational development and employability programs at the local Bronx Community Pride Center, in particular the student-run GED classes.
Commenting on her research experience and the Bronx-community outreach it involved, Ms. McGuire noted, "I was particularly drawn to community-based research because it held the promise of getting out of the classroom or clinic and into a setting where I could interact with others that are part of the Bronx community, not strictly as 'doctor'; and patient."
The research poster session is sponsored by the office of medical education.
