The yearly Advances meeting of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center (AECC) plays an important role in fostering interactions and collaborations among its members, who hail from almost every Einstein department. This summer, about 125 attendees, including Dr. Allen M. Spiegel and longtime supporters the Dempsey family, heard about the latest Einstein cancer research at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle.
Sessions at the meeting addressed areas of research focus at the Cancer Center, including The PI3 Kinase Pathway in Cancer, Mechanisms of Tumor Formation, and Stem Cells and Cancer. There was a lively discussion regarding the future of genomics in cancer diagnosis and treatment and the role that Einstein and Montefiore should play in this burgeoning area of research.
In his director’s report, Dr. I. David Goldman indicated that despite the sharp recent overall drop in National Institutes of Health funding for biomedical research in the United States, which has had a very adverse impact on AECC programs, there have been some notable recent successes in programmatic grants with the renewal of the Cancer Center Core Support Grant from the National Cancer Institute, the funding of a new NCI Community Oncology Research Program grant under the leadership of Drs. Joe Sparano, Mark Einstein and Bruce Rapkin, and the renewal of the program project grant on Tumor Invasion and Metastasis led by Dr. John Condeelis. Despite these successes, Dr. Goldman stressed the critical need for philanthropy to support recruitment of new faculty members in evolving research areas and to bolster existing research programs and launch new ones.
