Dr. Cunningham is a physician whose research centers on drug addiction and treatment, particularly opioid addiction and the use of buprenorphine for treatment. She currently serves on the NYC Mayor’s Heroin and Prescription Opioid Public Awareness Task Force and was a member of the CDC's Opioid Guideline Workgroup, which issued recommendations for tighter prescription guidelines in March 2016.

Dr. Cunningham has spent over a decade providing care, developing programs and conducting research focused on marginalized populations, including drug users, HIV-infected individuals, and recently incarcerated. She has previously served on numerous national advisory committees, including serving as the chair of NY State Department of Health AIDS Institute’s Substance Abuse Committee, a member of the NIH Office of AIDS Research’s Racial and Ethnic Populations Committee, a member of the NIH’s Behavioral and Social Consequences of HIV/AIDS Study Section, and a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s National Practice Guideline Committee for the Use of Medications in the Treatment of Addiction Involving Opioid Use. 

Dr. Cunningham has been principal investigator on numerous grants funded by the NIH, CDC, HRSA, SAMHSA, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and local and state Departments of Health.
