Clinical Professor, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences
Clinical Professor, The Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology
Clinical Professor, The Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurological Surgery
Dr. Slamovits obtained his medical degree from Ohio State University. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh, he was a Heed Fellow in Neuro-ophthalmology at Barnes Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 as director of the Neuro-ophthalmology Service and was promoted to associate professor in 1985. He joined the faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1988, as Director of the Neuro-ophthalmology Service. He served as Vice-chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurosurgery for 14 years. He is currently in private practice as a consulting neuro-ophthalmologist and continues his affiliation with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Dr. Slamovits has extensive experience in neuro-ophthalmic disorders and orbital and systemic diseases. He has a special interest in optic nerve and orbital diseases and has popularized the diagnosis of orbital tumors by fine needle aspiration biopsy. He also has an interest and expertise in the ocular manifestations of systemic diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis and cancer and has an interest in the effects of certain medications on the visual system.
Dr. Slamovits has served as chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic and Clinical Science Course, a multi-volume source updating ophthalmic basic and clinical information for residents and practicing ophthalmologists. He has also served as chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment (OKAP) Committee, which jointly with a committee of the American Board of Ophthalmology creates the written examinations taken by ophthalmology residents. He has published numerous scientific papers, chapters and textbooks and has served on the editorial board of the Survey of Ophthalmology, Current Ophthalmology and the Journal of Neuro-ophthalmology.
Dr. Slamovits is the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor and Senior Honor Awards and of the Secretariat Award for special contributions to the Academy and ophthalmology. He has been listed in Town and Country Magazine’s Outstanding Medical Specialists in the US, New York Magazine’s The Best Doctors in New York, Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, Best Doctors in America, Northeast Region and Best Doctors in America.
