Johanna T. Fifi, M.D. is a Neuroendovascular Surgeon who works at St-Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Fifi was born in Trinidad, British West Indies, where many of her family still reside. She attended high school in Florida and was subsequently awarded a full four year academic scholarship as a Trustee Scholar at Boston University. During college, she was accepted into a combined program to complete studies in biomedical engineering and then medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. In 2000, she moved to Philadelphia to perform her medicine internship and neurology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. From 2004 to 2006, she was a clinical fellow in stroke and cerebrovascular disorders at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. While at the NIH, Dr. Fifi was co-investigator of several phase II and phase III clinical trials for treatment of acute ischemic stroke. She was then trained in Interventional Neuro-Radiology under the tutelage of Dr. William Bank and at Columbia University.
After her neurointerventional training, Dr. Fifi was accepted at the Hyman-Newman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN) for further studies of pediatric neurointerventions under the tutelage of Prof. Alejandro Berenstein. During this period, she was invited to join the INN as a staff physician where she has developed a clinical practice taking care of patients with stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders. She also continues with her clinical research as investigator in several multi-center trials.
Dr. Fifi has published her research in peer reviewed journals. She has presented her work at national and international meetings, including the International Stroke Conference. She is a member of the American Stroke Association, Society for Vascular and Interventional Neurology, and Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery. She specializes in the endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disorders including acute stroke, carotid stenosis, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, as well as craniofacial vascular lesions in both adults and children.
