The complications of premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth and cervical incompetence, which often result in extreme prematurity and neonatal death, are areas on utmost interest to me. I believe these issues are intertwined withthe inflammatory process and human adaptation during pregnancy. Further delineation of this relationship is required to hopefully determine a treatment or preventative strategy. One career objective is to study the intrauterine environment over the period of latency in a pregnancy complicated by premature rupture of membranes. Using both clinical strategies and laboratory techniques, I hope to gain knowledge of the change in microbes, inflammatory cytokines and trigger of labor, which results in preterm delivery.
