Professional Interests
Dawn C. Buse, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology of Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Assistant Professor in the Clinical Health Psychology Doctoral Program of Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University. She is also a licensed clinical psychologist and Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Montefiore Headache Center, in New York, NY.
After earning a master’s degree and a doctorate in psychology from the University of Utah, Dr. Buse completed an internship in medical psychology in the Boston VA Medical System and Harvard Medical School and 3 years of postdoctoral fellowships in adult and pediatric headache and pain management at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Boston, and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Buse conducts research on headache and pain and is involved in the American Migraine Prevalence and Prevention (AMPP) study, a large, longitudinal US population-based study, among other projects. She has published widely and lectured nationally on behavioral treatments for headache and pain, the burden of migraine, and managing comorbidities including depression, anxiety, abuse, and cardiovascular risk. She has authored or co-authored more than 70 publications in scientific journals and coauthored manuscripts which won the American Headache Society: Wolff Award and the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches: Enrico Greppi Award. She has delivered more than 70 invited lectures internationally, nationally and locally at scientific meetings, in continuing medical education, at grand rounds, to medical students, graduate student, residents and attending physicians. She has also coauthored and presented more than 180 abstracts at scientific meetings.
At the Montefiore Headache Center, Dr. Buse provides clinical care, including assessment, cognitive behavioral therapy, and biofeedback. She teaches patients biobehavioral techniques including relaxation training, guided visual imagery, and self-hypnosis. She also shares these techniques through relaxation exercises which are available free of charge on CD and in podcasts on her website: dawnbuse.com.
She also mentors graduate students in the Ferkauf Doctoral Health Psychology program. She also serves as a consultant and reviewer for several journals and is on the advisory board of the Journal of Headache and Pain. She serves on the American Headache Society’s Education Committee and Electronic Media Committee, and the “Occupational Burden of Headache-Outcome Measures for Headache” working group of the World Health Organization “Lifting the Burden” campaign. In 2009 she received the “National Headache Foundation, Partners in Excellence Award” for her efforts on behalf of headache sufferers including research, teaching, and patient outreach.
