Yeshiva University's Faculty Safety Committees

The University's Faculty Safety Committees are a very important component of our safety program.  They provide evaluation and support for the various safety and health issues that must be addressed and they help EH&S to implement its program.  Each Committee is composed of knowledgeable faculty, staff, administration, and community members who can help oversee and addresse specific areas of the University's health and safety program.

 

Chemical Hazards and Storage Committee

The Chemical Hazards and Storage Committee reviews and supports the activities of EH&S and provides guidance for the safe use, procurement, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.  The Committee helps to promote a greater awareness and understanding, by the faculty and staff, for the need to conduct all laboratory procedures and activities with attention to occupational and environmental regulations.  It reviews new safety and health regulations and provides guidance on their application to the University.  The Committee also reviews research activities which raise safety and health issues and makes recommendations on how to control these activities.  It reviews the engineering facilities designed to protect the worker from hazards and also ensures that administrative controls, such as written guidelines on the use of hazardous chemicals, are available and followed.  The Committee acts as an interface among the researchers, EH&S and the Dean.

Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee reviews and supports the activities of EH&S in providing guidance on the safe use, procurement, storage, and disposal of biohazards.  The Committee reviews the activities of the Biohazard Facility (BSL3) and all recombinant DNA research to ensure compliance with CDC/NIH guidelines.  It promotes a greater awareness and understanding, by faculty and staff, for the need to conduct all laboratory procedures and activities with attention to occupational and environmental health and safety and to comply with governmental health and safety regulations.  The Committee reviews new safety and health regulations and provides guidance on their application to the University.  It reviews research activities and facilities design that raise biohazard safety and health issues and acts as an interface between the research faculty and EH&S.  The Committee also insures that administrative controls on biohazards, such as written guidelines and personal protective equipment, are available and are followed.  It recommends, to the Dean, measures necessary to reduce exposure of biohazards to the AECOM community.

 Radiation Safety Committee 

The Radiation Safety Committee reviews and supports the activities of EH&S in providing guidance on the safe use, procurement, storage, and disposal of radioactive material.  It ensures that research involving radioactive material and radiation-producing devices complies with applicable standards and guidelines.  It reviews and approves requests by Principal Investigators for a new license for radioactive material use.  The Committee promotes a greater awareness and understanding, by faculty and staff, for the need to conduct all laboratory procedures and activities with attention to environmental health and safety, to adhere to the principles of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) with respect to radiation exposure and encourages compliance with governmental health and safety regulations.  In addition, this Committee reviews new radiation safety regulations and provides guidance on their application to the research community, reviews research activities that raise radiation safety issues and assists and supports the Radiation Safety Officer in his efforts to resolve such issues.  In addition, the Committee ensures that administrative controls on the use of radioactive material, such as written guidelines, are available and are followed.  The Committee recommends, to the Dean, measures to decrease the exposure of the Einstein community to radiation and acts as an interface among the Research Faculty, EH&S and the Dean. 

Yeshiva University Administrative Safety Committee

This Committee reviews and supports the activities of EH&S in helping to provide a healthy and safe environment for all of its students, faculty, staff and visitors.  It offers guidance on the safe use, procurement, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.  It promotes a greater awareness and understanding by faculty, staff and students for the need to conduct all university activities with attention to personal and environmental health and safety and to comply with governmental health and safety regulations.  The Committee reviews regulations and their applicability to the University and reviews University activities that raise safety and health issues.  In addition, it reviews facility design to ensure that workers and students are adequately protected and helps ensure that administrative controls such as written guidelines and personal protective equipment are available and are being used.  The Committee recommends to the President, measures to improve the health and safety of the University and acts as an interface between the staff, faculty, students, EH&S and Administration.
