During the subinternship students will have an in-depth exposure to the surgery services which will include seeing patients on the in-patient wards, in the emergency room and in the outpatient clinics. Students will participate in operative cases appropriate for the PGY-1 level of experience and will take call overnight on the general surgery or trauma surgery services averaging once weekly during the rotation. As a subintern, students will be called first for patient issues on the inpatient wards and will work closely with the overnight consult resident. Subinterns will be responsible for the primary evaluation of some patients and for presenting these patients to chief residents and attendings. Attendance at surgical morbidity and mortality conference and specialty-specific conferences will also be required
Learning objectives of elective:
The objective of this subinternship is to prepare fourth year students both practically and intellectually for the first year of
all surgical residencies. Additional surgery 4
th year electives are available to explore the surgical specialties in addition to this subinternship.
Learning experience:

A704 Pediatric Surgery (Schneider Children's Hospital/North Shore-LIJ)
**Not Available to Visiting Students**The Division of Pediatrics Surgery at the Schneider Children's Hospital offers a one-month elective for 4th year medical students. This is a very busy pediatric surgical service. We enjoy a large volume of patients with many diverse clinical problems. Students on our service will interact with a large group of pediatric surgical attendings. In addition, general surgery residents from NS-LIJ rotate through the service and are actively involved in patient care. We are proud to have one of the country's few fully approved fellowships in pediatric surgery. Our fellow runs daily rounds and oversees the service. One morning a week is dedicated to formal didactics and the medical student will be integrated into the service with clinical responsibilities. The student will be expected to help us solve problems and support our spirit of lifelong learning. Our entire faculty shares a commitment to role modeling and education. This rotation should appeal to students interested in pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. It will be of interest to future surgeons who want exposure to pediatric surgery. The student likely to appreciate this experience is one who works hard and becomes actively involved in problem solving. Dr. Dolgin would like to speak to interested students before they commit to this experience.
