The Department offers a variety of electives for students to gain more experience in their area of interest.  It is strongly advised that students who are interested in applying to the Montefiore Residency Program make an appointment to see Dr. Erica Banks (ebanks@montefiore.org) during their elective rotation.

 

All students from Einstein, LCME-accredited medical schools and osteopathic medical schools may apply for certain electives listed below. 

 

Einstein students should contact Dr. Amy Kesselman (akesselm@montefiore.org) and the elective Course Director prior to registration for pre-approval and elective selection advising.  Once the Einstein student has determined their selection of elective(s), please contact the Registrar’s Office for manual registration.

 

Visiting and Osteopathic students should view the Visiting Student website for detailed application requirements and instruction as to how and when to apply for electives. Albert Einstein College of Medicine does not accept visiting students from non-LCME accredited medical schools and/or international students. All paperwork and fee requirements must be satisfied before final approval is granted by the Office of the Registrar. ALL Visiting students must adhere to the set rotation dates, per the Department. Visiting students should contact Dr. Amy Kesselman (akesselm@montefiore.org) and the elective Course Director prior to registration for pre-approval and elective selection advising.  The Office of the Registrar will register students accordingly. H505 Obstetrics Subinternship (Montefiore Medical Center-North Division)
General description and goals of elective: Students participating in this sub-internship at the North Division site will have the unique opportunity of becoming an active and integral part of the house staff team on our Labor and Delivery (L&D) suite as well as our Antepartum and Postpartum units. The student will participate in the management of in-patient obstetrical and high-risk patients, from admission through delivery. The student will be involved in daily rounds and all educational conferences. The student will be an active member of the labor floor team whose responsibilities will be similar to that of an intern in OB-GYN residency. Learning objectives of elective: Have experience with commonly encountered obstetrical problems (Preterm labor, Premature Rupture of Membranes, Preeclampsia, Hypertension in pregnancy, etc) and be able to discuss the diagnosis and management of each. Be able to describe the labor process and become familiar with fetal monitoring during labor. Be able to describe and perform a routine vaginal delivery and complications associated. Be able to describe indications for operative delivery: cesarean delivery and forceps/vacuum deliveries and assist providers with these procedures. Be able to access and care for the postpartum patient (including breastfeeding care). Be able to access and present patients in the outpatient High Risk Obstetrical Care clinic/office hours. Be able to describe general obstetrical ultrasound procedures and participate in obstetrical ultrasound procedures while on rotation. Learning experience: Daily sign out / morning report. Daily presence in L&D unit for care of obstetrical patients. Daily rounds on inpatient antepartum patients. Daily rounds on postpartum patients. Meet once with lactation consultant for breastfeeding education. Two weeks of daytime rotation / two weeks of night rotation. Attend Departmental Grand Rounds and OB/GYN Resident School (Tuesdays). H501 Maternal Fetal Medicine
(Montefiore Medical Center-North Division)
General description and goals of elective: Students participating in this elective will be part of the perinatal team and contribute in the diagnosis and management of various complications of pregnancy. Students will gain experience by participating in direct patient care, working in the obstetrical ultrasound unit: Maternal-Fetal Assessment Center (MFAC) and in care of women seen in the High Risk pregnancy program at the MMC North Division. The student will participate in the management of in-patient obstetrical high-risk patients, from admission through delivery. The student will be involved in daily rounds and all educational conferences. Learning objectives of elective: Have experience with commonly encountered obstetrical problems (Preterm labor, Premature Rupture of Membranes, Preeclampsia, Hypertension in pregnancy, etc) and be able to discuss the diagnosis and management of each. Be able to describe fetal monitoring and antepartum fetal testing. Be able to describe and perform a biophysical profile and basic biometric measurement on ultrasound.  Be able to describe prenatal diagnostic procedures (amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal blood sampling, etc) and screening tests for aneuploidy (first trimester screening with nuchal translucency, etc). Be able to access and care for the complicated antepartum patient. Be able to access and present patients in the outpatient High Risk Obstetrical Care clinic/office hours. Be able to describe general obstetrical ultrasound procedures and participate in obstetrical ultrasound procedures while on rotation. Learning experience: Daily sign out / morning report. H510 Subinternship in Gynecology (Weiler Hospital)
The student will spend one month on the Weiler Gynecology Service. The purpose of the sub-internship is to give the student an in-depth exposure to benign Gynecology, GYN surgery and the Gynecologic aspects of a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Many of the third year clerkships place a stronger emphasis on obstetrics and sub-internships are available for Obstetrics and for Gyn Oncology (specifically dealing with Gyn malignancies, and the surgical and non surgical management of them). This rotation will provide the student with the opportunity to function on an intern level, and play an active role in the pre-operative, intra-operative and postoperative management of benign gynecological patients.  The student will first assist on a variety of major and minimally invasive GYN procedures and will function as an integral member of the team. The student will be required to round daily with the team at 7 am and present to the GYN attending on service. The student will perform complete admission histories and physicals, formulate a differential diagnosis, develop a diagnostic and therapeutic plan and present to the senior resident. The student will participate in Emergency Room consults and pre-operative clinics with the GYN team. The student will be responsible for subsequent management and daily follow-up for each patient assigned. The student will participate in all GYN conferences.  The student will have the opportunity to hone his/her surgical skills and be given  the opportunity to perform exams under anesthesia, D&Cs, hysteroscopy, fascia and skin closure as well as GYN sonograms and endometrial biopsies. Each student will be required to give an oral topic presentation to the GYN residents and attending as well as submit a written case write-up. At the end of the elective the student should:  Have experience with commonly encountered GYN problems (fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, urinary incontinence, prolapse) and be able to discuss the management of each. Be able to describe indications for commonly performed abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic procedures. Be able to discuss work up and treatment options for common gynecologic disorders (i.e. abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, etc). Understand anticipated results and potential complications for various treatments of gynecological disorders. Demonstrate knowledge of preoperative and post-operative care. Typical Day: 7am-6pm Monday-Friday. Two weekend day calls covering GYNconsult service. Prerequisite: Successful completion of third year.

H602 Gyn-Oncology Subinternship
(Weiler Hospital)
A Subinternship is offered to provide an opportunity for the student to participate in the management of gynecologic oncology patients. The student will be exposed to the management of acutely and chronically ill patients with gynecologic malignancies. It is anticipated that the student will develop some technical skills related to venous access, thoracentesis, paracentesis, etc. The student will participate in the pre and post operative management of patients on the gynecologic oncology service. The basic principles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy will be introduced. There is exposure to different clinical settings and extensive surgical opportunities in the operating room. Didactic and bedside teaching with attendings, fellows and residents occurs on a daily basis. Interest students are encouraged to participate in the ongoing clinical and/or basic research. Previous students have published their research in peer reviewed journals and presented their data at national meetings.

H509 Reproductive Genetics
(Institute for Women's Health Genetics and Human Reproduction-Montefiore Medical Park)
Reproductive Genetics offers a clinic experience dealing with patients and couples with genetic or genetically-related disorders seen in obstetrical practice. This includes couples with problems of infertility, pregnancy wastage, and factors contributing to adverse pregnancy outcome. Opportunity will be provided to participate in genetic screening and counseling, prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis, chronic villus sampling or cordocentesis, teratogen counseling, and other approaches useful in the application of the most current genetic knowledge to obstetrical practice.

H508 Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
(Fertility and Hormone Center, Montefiore's Institute for Reproductive Medicine, Hartsdale, NY)
Observation of patient care and direct patient care (at Jacobi Medical Center clinic). Students will observe monitoring of follicle growth, oocyte retrievals and office practice in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI). Weekly seminars with the Division Director or Associate Director. Readings and conferences on clinical cases of Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology. Students will have to provide their own transportation to the Westchester sites.

H506 Family Planning
(Weiler Hospital/Montefiore Medical Park)

General description and goals of elective: Students participating in this elective will be part of the family planning team and will contribute to management of women seeking care in our outpatient ambulatory care facility; they will also participate in OR cases and inpatient consultations at Jack D. Weiler Hospital. Students will also observe and participate in surgical cases at Jacobi Medical Center. Clinical exposures include medical and surgical management of abortion and pregnancy failure in the first and second trimester, high-risk contraception consultation and provision of all contraceptive methods including intrauterine devices, contraceptive implants and transcervical sterilization. Upon completing this rotation, students should have a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of reproductive decision making, procedural and non-procedural aspects of pregnancy management in the first and second trimester and modern methods of contraception.  It is hoped that students will also learn compassionate, patient-centered and nonjudgmental strategies to communicate with patients about these issues as well. Learning objectives of elective: To understand the public health impact of unintended pregnancy in the U.S. and abroad. To obtain clinical skills relating to first and second trimester surgical abortion and pregnancy failure management including counseling, sonography, preoperative and postoperative management. To understand and participate in provision of medical abortion and pregnancy failure management in the first trimester. To understand the full range of contraceptive medications, devices and surgical procedures. To engage in critical analysis of the medical literature related to family planning. Learning experience: Evaluation and management of patients who present for care in ambulatory setting. Participate in sonography for pregnancy dating. Provide comprehensive contraception counseling. Participate in monthly FP journal club. Attend Departmental Grand Rounds and Ob/Gyn Resident School on Tuesdays. Complete FP Curriculum. Present a case/topic to FP team during the rotation (Power Point). Method of student feedback and evaluation: Orientation to rotation on first day of rotation with delineation of expectations. H500 Reproductive Endocrinology
(Montefiore Medical Center)
The student will see patients who have problems with reproductive hormone (some male, although mostly female patients). Patients will be followed in the Gyn-Endo, and Medical Endocrine Clinic and in Dr. Freeman's private practice of Endocrinology Menopause and Osteoporosis on Mondays PM and Thursday AM. Students will participate in the bone densitometry procedures and evaluations.  The student may participate in research regarding treatment of postmenopausal patients and osteoporosis. We are currently enrolling patients in the KEEPS (Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study) and have additional ongoing clinical trials. There is a new study of the glucose levels over 3 days, including regular activities in PCOS patients.

H700  Perinatal Medicine (Long Island Jewish Medical Center)

The aim of this Clinical Clerkship is for the student to develop the basic understanding of the diagnosis and management of obstetrical and perinatal complications.  The student will participate in rounds on the Obstetrics and Postpartum floors, attend "high risk" Prenatal Clinic, Antepartum Clinic and Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity Conferences.  Assignment will be made to a senior resident on the obstetric service for continuous supervision and night call rotation.  He/she will follow Obstetric patients in labor with resident or attending physician, interpret fetal heart rate/uterine contractility, monitoring, learn the role of fetal scalp ph sampling during labor, and participate in vaginal and abdominal deliveries and the immediate neonatal care.
