Not Available to International Exchange Students
During this elective subinternship, which consists of two weeks at Jacobi and two weeks at Montefiore Medical Center, students learn the basics of Emergency Medicine through a process of carefully supervised immersion consisting of hands-on education. Although the vast majority of teaching and learning occurs at the bedside, the elective also includes 12 hours of didactics, encompassing the core topics in Emergency Medicine. The curriculum includes a suture workshop and an introduction to ACLS. Each didactic session is linked to several chapters in a text designed for those students who may be interested in more in-depth reading. A copy of this text is loaned to each student for the duration of the subinternship.

K500T Trauma in Emergency Medicine (Jacobi Medical Center)
Not Available to International Exchange Students
The Trauma in Emergency Medicine tutorial is a structured program designed to expose the student to the wide range of experiences of a busy Trauma Level I center. This interdisciplinary elective is arranged so that on the surgical side of the adult Jacobi Emergency Department will be augmented by exposure to the the trauma surgery, Orthopaedics and hyperbaric services. The medical student will be involved in the initial care of the trauma patient and will follow the OR significant trauma cases. The students will log all of their cases permitting them to follow up on these patients later in their hospitalization to discover the outcome of the patient's care.  Weekly tutorial sessions covering the relevant trauma cases will be led by Emergency Medicine faculty. The two tutorial students will be the only other participants in this tutorial. There will be a vast amount of teaching directly connected to patient care at the bedside. There will also be 12 hours of didactics presented by EM/Einstein faculty. The student will be permitted to attend the morning didactic program including the joint EM/Surgery trauma rounds, EM follow-up rounds and the weekly EM core conferences. Jacobi is also the snakebite center for NYC and as such has a unique relationship with the Bronx Zoo. One morning will spent learning about poisonous animals at the Bronx Zoo. As one of two trauma centers in the Bronx, the pathology available to the students is remarkable. This is a unique opportunity to interact with the multiple disciplines involved in care of very ill trauma patients at an inner city trauma center.
