APPLICATION

What are the eligibility requirements for the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM?  

All participants must be U.S. citizens currently attending high school in the United States. We strongly encourage minority students from underserved populations to apply.


Is there a minimum age or grade level? 

es, students must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program (July 2, 2018).  Please note: there are no exceptions to this rule.  There are no minimum grade level requirements. For example, a high school sophomore may apply to the program if he or she will be 16 years old by the starting date.

Are there any minimum GPA or curriculum requirements?  

There is no minimum requirement, but in general accepted students rank in the top 10% of their class. Of particular importance is the student’s interest in science as indicated by science courses, prior experiences, and a strong letter of recommendation from a high school science teacher.

Is there a fee to submit an application or participate in the program?  

No, there is no fee to apply and there is no cost to participate in the program. However, participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the Einstein campus and their own meals.

Can students apply to the program if they live outside the Tri-State Area (NY, NJ, CT)?  

Yes, students outside the Tri-State Area may apply.  However, please note: the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM is unable to provide housing, so it is the responsibility of the student to arrange an appropriate housing situation and convenient daily transportation to Einstein before the program begins.

Can I mail in my application?  

No. All applications (including recommendation letters) must be submitted via the online application system. If you have issues with your online application, please contact phd@einstein.yu.edu. Subject: E-M High School Program.

Is it possible to request permission to apply after the deadline? 

Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Whom should I ask to write recommendation letters for me?  

In order for your application to be reviewed, you must have at least 1 letter of recommendation letter from a science teacher. The letter should be written by someone who can attest to your background in science (biology, chemistry, or physics), your academic achievements, and your strong interest in science. Recommendation letters from family or friends are not appropriate and will not be reviewed.

Should I contact the faculty member of a particular laboratory? 

Applicants should not contact individual faculty members.

When will students find out whether or not they’ve been accepted to the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM?  

Acceptance to the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM is on a rolling basis. In general, most students will be notified between late April and early June.

If I am accepted, how long will I have to confirm that I will participate in the program? 

If accepted, you will have 5 days to accept or decline the offer. If we do not hear from you by the deadline date, we will assume that your have declined the offer. There will be no exceptions to the deadline date.

Is there a waitlist? 

No, we do not utilize a waitlist. Students are notified on a rolling basis as long as space in the program is still available. Occasionally, students may not be notified until mid-June.

PROGRAM

When does the program begin and end?  

The program dates for 2018 are July 2 – July 26, 2018.  Students accepted into the program must commit to full time participation for the duration of the four week program (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday).

Can students start later or leave earlier than the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM's official start and end dates? 

The program dates for 2016 are June 27 – July 28, 2016.  Students accepted into the program must commit to full time participation for the duration of the four week program (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday). Late start or early termination are not available.

What is the daily and weekly time commitment? 

T Students are expected to be in the laboratory from 9am-5pm, Monday- Friday. In addition, students must participate in the various enrichment sessions of the program (approximately 3 hours of classes and lectures each week).

Is there any time for other activities? 

No, the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM is an intense summer experience requiring full-time participation in the laboratory and enrichment sessions, as well as preparation for a poster presentation.

Is it possible to participate in the program part-time?  

No, participants are required to participate fully in the entire four weeks of the program including the poster session on the last day. Students who cannot fulfill this commitment are not eligible for the program.

How many students participate in the program? 

The EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM usually has 12-15 students.

Can students choose their own laboratories?  

Students will be placed in a laboratory according to the research interests indicated on the application and the availability of space and mentors within the laboratory. Please note that many laboratories are unable to host high school students because of the type of research (e.g. infectious diseases research or research with human patients) going on in the laboratory.

Are stipends available? 

There is no stipend for the program.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

After the summer, can I submit my EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM research findings/poster/abstract to another science fair not affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine?  

It is important to note that any scientific work you conduct at Einstein during the EINSTEIN-MONTEFIORE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL RESEARCH PROGRAM is the property of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Therefore, you must obtain formal written consent from the laboratory head to use this work in another science fair.

Can my summer project be used for competition in national science contests?  

No, the summer research program is only one month in duration. This is too short a time for you to complete sufficient work for a national science competition project.
