Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Summer 2013 Students Told Us...

"The day I arrived, my mentor motivated and pushed me to learn more and do more for the research project."

"I really feel that I now know what working full-time in a lab feels like, and the fact that I enjoyed it cemented my decision to pursue a career in research."

"Wouldn't have traded this summer experience for anything else!"

"I liked getting to go to seminars with faculty in various areas of research."

"I got to do research, meet some good people, and go to the Bronx Zoo!"

Monday, June 8 - Thursday, July 30, 2015

Each summer the Einstein Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) brings together 50 college students each summer for a one-of-a-kind opportunity to conduct original research in a laboratory at one of the world's top-ranking scientific institutions. The program is designed for undergraduates with a strong background in science who are considering a research career.

Program Features

SURP students arrive at Einstein in mid-June for a nine-week research laboratory work experience. Students are matched to a laboratory in the area of interest they indicate on their application. At the end of the program, students present their research in a poster session.

Faculty Seminar
In addition to research, SURP students participate in a variety of complementary scientific activities:

  • small-group meetings to discuss their research with other students
  • weekly faculty seminars on leading-edge research topics
  • a workshop on ethical issues in science and medicine
  • a career planning workshop

Campus Tour
During their seven-week stay, SURP students are considered members of Einstein’s student body, making them eligible to take part in all social activities on campus. In addition, several trips and activities are planned specifically for SURP students.

  • a day at the Bronx Zoo
  • a student mixer
  • student-faculty luncheons and barbecues

The SURP summer internship experience includes:

  • free housing in the student residence complex on the Einstein campus
  • $3,000 stipend
  • up to $500 in transportation assistance (for students who live outside the New York City metropolitan area only; international travel cannot be reimbursed)

Admission and Application

Eligibility

Outstanding undergraduate students considering the SURP program must meet the following criteria:

  • A strong background in the sciences (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, bioengineering or chemical engineering, etc.).
  • Completion of junior year in college. In rare instances, sophomores with strong science and/or research backgrounds may be considered. Freshmen and seniors (graduating in Spring/Summer 2015) will not be considered.
