In Southern Uganda, our work is based in Kisoro and is directed toward the reduction of maternal mortality. We currently hold a semi-annual midwife conference aimed at improving the knowledge and skills of the 34 midwives who attend from 18 health centers and two hospitals in the region. We also facilitate current outreach services provided through staff from the local district hospital to all outlying health centers where nurses are providing point of care cervical cancer screening, family planning, HIV testing, domestic violence screening and antenatal visits. Efforts are also focused on building the capacity of the region’s 18 health centers that provide maternity care to include supply of clean water, sterilization methods, illumination sources and obstetric instruments. Finally, we have partnered with the village health worker (VHW) program where the VHWs are incentivized to discover pregnant women, counsel them and direct them toward appropriate antenatal care.
