The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health


The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Health System/Albert Einstein College of Medicine is centered on providing comprehensive health care to women and is recognized nationally and internationally for our clinical, education and research achievements focused on improving patient outcomes. Our department of 130 faculty and 375 staff are providing clinical care and training to the next generation of physicians at multiple ambulatory and inpatient facilities throughout the Bronx and Westchester communities. We provide a robust training program for our medical students, residents and fellows. The department has every approved fellowship program in the subspecialties of Family Planning, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility and Reproductive & Medical Genetics. Previous trainees and faculty in the department have attained recognition in medical schools throughout the country, including serving as Chairs.  

Sharmila Makhija, MD, MBA (2015-present) is the sixth Department Chair.  The previous Department Chairs include: Morris Glass, MD (1955-1957), Seymour Romney, MD (1957-1972), Harold Schulman, MD (1972-1980), Irwin Kaiser, MD (1980-1982) and Irwin Merkatz, MD (1982-2015). 


Our mission is to provide comprehensive women's health care to improve health outcomes for the diverse population of women we serve in our community. Complementary to our mission is our commitment to educate the next generation of health care professionals and to participate in evidence based research to ensure patient care continues to evolve in the areas of quality and safety. To this end, a culture of learning and collaboration is present within the department through innovative interdisciplinary relationships.   We are proud of our history and are building on our strengths to be the department of choice for highly capable medical staff, trainees and employees who share our mission.
