Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Participate?

To participate, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be 25 to 65 years old
  • Live in Bronx County, New York
  • Be able to read and speak English fluently
  • Be free of visual impairment
  • Be ambulatory

What is the Commitment Like?

If you are eligible to participate, you will be asked to visit the ESCAPE office. The initial visit will last about 2 hours. You may be invited back for an additional 2 visits.

How often will I be asked to participate?

If you are eligible for the study, you will be asked to visit our offices every six months for 4 years.  Of course, you may choose to stop your participation at any time.

Are there any benefits to taking part in this study?

Yes! You may learn more about yourself by carefully monitoring your daily activities and mood.  The information learned from this study may benefit others by contributing to research that will in the future help us to better understand the relationship between health and aging.

Are there any risks in taking part in this study?

Completing questionnaires will require a time investment.  Making ratings on the smartphone may result in a slight interruption in your daily activities.

Is my participation in the study confidential?

Yes, you will be assigned an ID number and neither your name nor any other identifying information will ever appear in any written or verbal reports.  Our databases will be coded and all files are kept in locked cabinets.

Will I be compensated for my participation?

Yes, you will be monetarily compensated for your completion of the protocol.
