One-Year Preliminary Internship

The Einstein-Montefiore Department of Medicine provides several one-year positions for applicants who need preparation in general medicine before entering a specialty residency such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, or radiology.

The preliminary year is similar to the categorical internship. Preliminary interns are members of one of the medical firms and have a curriculum that fulfills their subspecialty requirements which vary, but include general medicine wards, intensive care, emergency room rotation, and a subspecialty elective.


  • General Medicine Wards (including night team): 7 months
  • MICU: 1-2 months
  • CCU/Cardiology: 1 month
  • ER: 1 month
  • Subspecialty elective: 1 month
  • Vacation: 1 month
