General Description
The Categorical Track Intensified Research Rotation structure is designed to give selected residents concentrated mentored exposure to either basic or clinical research. Residents who qualify for this rotation will have a specially designed schedule during their second or third year.
Rotation Outline
Select residents will be scheduled for three months of consecutive protected research time, the maximum allowed by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The protected research time will be drawn from general elective time.
Residents will continue their weekly continuity clinic and will have coverage responsibilities that, across the years, will be equal to that of their peers in the program. Their other clinical rotations will be identical to those of the other categorical residents and will meet all ABIM requirements for board eligibility.
Application Process
Opening date for 2013-14 applications is January 1, 2013.
Applications will be accepted after January 1 of the PGY-1 year. This will allow time for acclimatization to the residency and to permit consideration of a project.
Applications may be submitted until March 31. Evaluation and approval will be done in a timely fashion, allowing lead time to develop an appropriate PGY-2 year schedule.
The application process will include development of an idea, identification of a suitable mentor and a brief outline of the research plan.
Applicants must submit:
- Curriculum vitae (1 or 2 pages)
- One-page description of the proposed study
- Brief personal statement explaining their reasons for participating
- Biosketch of the research mentor with the mentor’s statement of support, comments on the feasibility of the research and documentation of their commitment to the resident
Mentors are available for projects in all Medicine Subspecialties as well as in General Medicine.
Selection Process
Candidates will be selected by a faculty committee. Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- strong desire to become clinical or basic researchers
- planned a research project that is feasible and relevant
- participated in research in the past
- performed well on their clinical rotations
- chosen productive mentors with strong track record in basic or clinical research
Expectations for Chosen Applicants
Once chosen, residents will work with their mentor to begin to prepare for their research rotation so that all the necessary requirements (IRB approval, research safety requirements etc) are full filled before the start. Residents are expected to complete a clinical or basic science research project and to submit a manuscript and abstract to a major conference. Funds will be made available to allow the resident to present their work at the conference.
