Safyer to be Honored by UJA-Federation

Steven M. Safyer, MD

Dr. Steven M. Safyer, Professor of Medicine and of Epidemiology & Population Health, and President and Chief Executive Officer of Montefiore Medical Center, will be honored at this year’s UJA-Federation of New York Montefiore/Einstein Campaign Annual Reception, to be held Tuesday, December 13, 2011.

Dr. Safyer has been recognized for his professional accomplishments and exemplary leadership within the healthcare community, especially in the Bronx, where he is a leading advocate for Montefiore, a UJA-Federation beneficiary agency. A 1982 graduate of Einstein who also completed the Primary Care and Social Internal Medicine program, Dr. Safyer is a public health leader with a national reputation for developing community-based health initiatives. His achievements include one of the first Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) Tuberculosis programs in New York state, a coordinated network of AIDS care, and the Rikers Island Correctional Health program. Dr. Safyer has been part of Montefiore Medical Center since the mid-1980s. His roles have included Director of the Montefiore Program at Rikers, Medical Director, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. He was appointed Montefiore's CEO and President in January 2008, following a national search, and has led the medical center through a comprehensive strategic planning process, acquisition and integration of the Montefiore North Division, and the signing of an unprecedented ten-year affiliation agreement with Einstein, among other initiatives.

The Montefiore/Einstein Campaign is part of the UJA-Federation of New York's annual campaign, supported by more than 60,000 donors, which helps sustain a network of over 100 agencies in New York, Israel, and throughout the world. The agency’s mission is to care for people in need, inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning, and strengthen Jewish communities worldwide.

The event will be held at Montefiore Medical Center's Grand Hall in the Tishman Learning Center. Eliot L. Engel, Congressman and Member of U.S. House of Representatives, will be the guest speaker.
