Dr. Rita Louard, Director of the Clinical Diabetes Center, and colleagues have organized an exciting series of programs and events for the month of November 2010, American Diabetes Month, to educate and raise the awareness of diabetes and its complications. Programs and events are sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center, the teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The Bronx has the highest prevalence of diabetes of the 5 boroughs and higher rates of diabetes complications and hospitalizations. Living and working in the Bronx, we at Montefiore clearly recognize the challenge of the diabetes epidemic.
- Over 24 million Americans are living with diabetes.
- 57 million Americans are at risk of developing diabetes.
- If current trends continue, 1 in 3 Americans born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes. 1 in 2 minorities born that year are projected to develop diabetes.
