Ruy Soeiro, a longstanding member of the Einstein-Montefiore Division of Infectious Diseases, died August 20, 2009.

In a letter to colleagues, Liise-anne Pirofski, Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, wrote the following:

"Ruy was a founding member of our division and one of our leaders who served as co-division chief and division chief at Einstein for many years. He first came to Einstein in 1965 as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of James Darnell and went on to join the faculty and rise through the academic ranks in the Departments of Medicine and Microbiology and Immunology to serve and enrich our division and the greater medical and scientific community at Einstein in every possible way as a clinical and basic science faculty member, division chief, attending physician, committee chairperson and as a trusted and valued colleague, advisor and friend. Those of us who were trained by Ruy and who began our careers on his watch will never forget his support and optimism or how much he cheered for us and wanted us to succeed, and all who knew and interacted with him will never forget his unwavering dedication and commitment to the educational and scientific excellence of our division and the entire Einstein community.

I know that all of you join me in sending our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Ruy's wife Susan and his sons, Damon and Loren, and telling them that our thoughts are with and our hearts are out to them at this terrible time of sorrow. Funeral arrangements are private. Arrangements are being made to establish a fund at Einstein for contributions to the Division of Infectious Diseases."

Plans are underway for a memorial service at Einstein in the fall.
