Dr. Maria del Mar Cirino-Marcano

Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine (Pulmonary Medicine)

Professional Interests

Dr. Maria Cirino is interested in interventional pulmonology, lung cancer diagnostics and care, COPD, and pleural disease.  She established the Interventional Pulmonology Service at Montefiore/Einstein, which consists of a team formally trained in advanced, minimally invasive pulmonary procedures for the diagnosis, staging and treatment of patients with diverse pulmonary conditions. This service will provide both clinical and procedural expertise to patients with airway obstruction, pleural diseases, and cancer involving the lung.  The team provides a range of services including initial diagnostic evaluation of patients with pulmonary nodules or effusions to routine surveillance of patients at risk of recurrent disease, and the care of patients with pulmonary complications of malignancy.  Techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound for lymph node staging, image-guided bronchoscopy, tracheal/bronchial stents, laser therapy for lung cancer, one way valves for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction, are in hand.

Dr. Cirino received her MD, and her internal medicine residency, from the University of Puerto Rico Health Sciences Campus/University Hospital in San Juan, P.R. Subspecialty training was in Pulmonary and Critical Care (PCCM) at Tulane, followed by an additional year of formal training in Interventional Pulmonology at Tulane.  She joined the faculty in the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Environmental Diseases Section at Tulane, and had recently been an Assistant Professor of PCCM at University of Louisville Medical Center, where she established an Interventional Pulmonology Service, before moving to Montefiore/Einstein.
