While the diverse patient population and complex pathology are the true strengths of Einstein's Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program, the faculty and fellows have also constructed a dynamic educational curriculum consisting of internal didactics and courses as well as external congresses and conferences within the fields of rheumatology, immunology and musculoskeletal health.
Internal Didactics and Courses
- Physical Exam Basics – Given during orientation by senior faculty to review the musculoskeletal exam prior to starting fellowship
- Introduction to Rheumatology – several weekly lectures during the month of July introducing basic concepts of Rheumatology
- Pharmacology – several comprehensive lectures at the beginning of the year
- Radiology – monthly one-hour sessions with an experienced musculoskeletal radiologist, Dr. Haramati
- Rehab - with PM&R Attending, Dr. Saad (mini-course 6-7 sessions over the course of 1 year)
- Fellow Journal Club - every Wednesday except for when we have Rehab sessions or Immunodiagnostic lectures
- Fellow Case Conference – once a month a fellow presents a case conference and relevant literature review (fellows rotate)
- Immunology Club - every 4-6 weeks with the program director, Dr. Schwartzman
- Immunodiagnostics lecture - 3 lectures by Dr. Barland
- Immunodiagnostics Lab - 2 weeks, all second year fellows to attend this in June 2010
- Fundamentals in Clinical Research for second year fellows - all passed exam and received certificates
- Epidemiology with 2 MSCRs (Dr. Broder and Dr. Blanco), 6 sessions total
- Meet-the-professor series: Virginia Steen 12/09 – Scleroderma Expert from Georgetown; Carol Langford 3/10 – Vasculitis Expert from Cleveland Clinic
- Board Review- run by second year fellows
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound course: in the spring, all fellows
- Twice a month Lupus Session prior to SLE clinic with Dr. Wallis
- Back to the Anatomy Lab – every other year, lectures given by anatomy professors from Einstein discussing form, function and review of basic anatomy. Rheumatology faculty also lectures on clinical applications and physical exam findings. Hands-on workshop afterwards in the anatomy lab injecting bursa and joints.
