Division of Pulmonary Medicine

From the Chief

The Einstein-Montefiore Division of Pulmonary Medicine's missions include:

  1. Exceptional clinical care for all patients
  2. Inspired teaching at all levels through sub-specialization
  3. Clinical and translational research to expand biomedical knowledge of respiratory diseases

The Division's long history in each of these endeavors has been undergoing evolution, with the recommitment of both the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center institutions to complimentary integrated missions.  There is ongoing recruitment of outstanding clinician-teachers, clinical scholars, and physician-scientists. In particular, the group has recruited or directly co-recruited faculty into interventional pulmonary medicine, early lung cancer detection, pulmonary hypertension, transplant medicine, and other newly emerging fields. Our Sleep Medicine laboratory has expanded in Montefiore's east /Westchester Square campus, and our Pulmonary Function laboratory has expanded in both east and west campuses.

Our Division's clinical strengths include diagnosis and management of common and rare diseases of the chest, including dyspnea, cough, asthma, COPD, lung infections, environmental lung diseases, sleep medicine, lung cancer diagnostics, airway pathology, and more. We regularly integrate with other services in the medical centers, particularly with thoracic surgery, oncology, and transplant medicine.

Our teaching program is robust, with approximately four new pulmonary and critical care fellows entering each year, with a 100% pass rate in ABIM PM and CCM board exams. Our 3-year pulmonary fellowship program offers an exceptionally diverse range of patient encounters and environments including Montefiore Medical Center (west campus); Weiler Hospital (east campus); Jacobi Medical Center, a large municipal hospital; attendant outpatient and research opportunities. Publications on clinical series routinely emerge from these encounters, and the option exists to pursue additional formal training in clinical research, for the truly committed during additional years, through Einstein's Clinical Research Training Program master's degree programs.

Our Division's ongoing research historically has been physiologically and clinically oriented. Long-time members of our faculty have published seminal papers in hypoxia, cough, environmental lung disease, and sleep medicine, with much of the work ongoing. Currently, our research includes lung cancer diagnostics and management, asthma epidemiology, outcomes, and biomarkers, mycobacterial disease studies, airway interventional device research, and sleep medicine research. The Pulmonary Lab inhabits Einstein's spectacular Price Center for Genomic & Translational Medicine, where work on generating novel noninvasive molecular approaches and gene dysregulation are aimed at tracking early lung disease processes such as carcinogenesis, and inflammation, in ambulatory humans.

This is indeed an exciting period in the Division's history. Colleagues, visitors, and most importantly, patients will directly benefit.
